I Didn’t Do It, God Did … Give Him The Glory

John Tilton

Scripture

Jeremiah 1:16

I will pronounce my judgmentson my people because of their wickednessin forsaking me, in burning incense to other gods and in worshipingwhat their hands have made.

Observation

Jeremiah spoke the words of the Lord that judgement would come down on the people for their forsaking the Lord by worshipping other gods and worshipping things they had made and accomplished. It’s very clear that worshipping other gods in place of the one and only God would rightfully bring judgement. However, Jeremiah calls them on the fact that they would worship the things they had accomplished and made … an act that can be so subtle and confused with acknowledging one’s accomplishment versus worshipping one’s accomplishment.

Application

These scriptures speak to me in terms of remembering that God is the source of my accomplishments and success, and that He deserves the glory in His clear faithfulness, answered prayers and success realized. I don’t want to let my accomplishment and achievements become trophies of what I think I did, rather than what I know God did, and think that I am “all that.” I want to be careful of a human and carnal propensity for to revel in and seek the accolades, “believe our press” and steal God’s glory. The process often is – seeking God in prayer for guidance, resolution and success; then after we see God’s faithfulness and favor, we tend to revel in it being our accomplishment. I need to realize that I didn’t do it, God did, and that I need to give Him the Honor, glory and praise.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I am grateful for your using me with your guidance and faithfulness in enabling me to achieve those things that you’ve privileged me to be called to do. May I remember that you are the source of all that I do and accomplish, and that all glory and honor should acknowledge you and who you are in my life. I thank you for your favor and faithfulness.
