Cost Benefit

John Tilton

Scripture

Romans 3:1-4

What advantage, then, is there in being a Jew, or what value is there in circumcision? Much in every way! First of all, the Jews have been entrusted with the very words of God. What if some were unfaithful? Will their unfaithfulness nullify God’s faithfulness? Not at all! Let God be true, and every human being a liar. As it is written: “So that you may be proved right when you speak and prevail when you judge.

Observation

Is there an advantage and value to being a believer and following the Lord by circumcising ourselves from our fleshly desires and ways? Paul cites an important comparison that is important for us today in that as we have been given God’s word as a benefit to teach and grow us, we have not had to pay the true cost to receive the benefit. In business, we know of the “cost benefit” principle where the benefit is weight against the cost, resulting in a determination if the benefit is worth the cost. Thus, if someone invests an amount of money, that investment is compared to the amount of benefit, profit or gain that is realized. The key being that the cost should never exceed the benefit, profit or gain. Yet in God’s realm as He sacrificed His son Jesus Christ on the cross for our sins that we might have eternal life, the cost of Jesus dying on the cross is exponentially high, yet God gave His son for a benefit for each and everyone of us even though we are the sinners that don’t deserve the gift of grace. Yet, God gave that give as a benefit and value that is eternal.

Application

When I ponder and realize this fact of the cost benefit of Jesus Christ dying for my sins, my resolve and intention leads me to want to treasure and value the benefit I’ve received by the cost of Jesus giving His life for me. On a daily basis, that means that I must value and steward the words of God that is mine for the receiving that I will grow in my faith, my walk and my obedience.

Prayer

Thank you Lord for providing me with the best deal in the world … eternal life with you and an insight into your will and way. I will receive value and steward your gift.
